Tanzania Buses
Bus- routes are between major cities and towns throughout Tanzania.

Major express bus companies in Tanzania include Dar Express Bus, Kilimanjaro Extress, Royal and Akamba Bus.

From Dar es Salaam buses depart from Ubungu Bus Station and even from the city center, Kariakoo and Gerezani Street and along Lumumba Street.

A new regional bus stand is currently under planning along Morogoro Road, Mbezi Louis.

Tanzania buses run between smaller towns as well as large towns.

Tanzanian buses can be quite wild and rough, they mainly keep schedules and only stop for 10 minutes a couple of times for bathroom breaks, if you take to lng the bus will depart without you and you will be lucky if the next one picks you up, so always be on your toes when the bus stops for a break.

Tanzania Buses Arusha, Dar es Salaam, Mbeya, Iringa, Mwanza, Moshi, Tanga, Nairobi, Mombasa, Kampala daily.

Tanzania Buses Arusha, Dar es Salaam, Mbeya, Iringa, Mwanza, Moshi, Tanga, Nairobi, Mombasa, Kampala daily.

The bus is a great way to get into Tanzania.

Fly to a place like Nairobi, then you can catch a bus down to Arusha a great base for Mount Meru and Ngorongoro Crater.

Also, you should not forget the south central part of Tanzania, away from tourist hawkers.

Roads in Tanzania aren’t in good condition; there are no highways, and there are very few multiple lane segments along main roads.

Tanzania Buses slow down or stop in most villages because of traffic, police, and speed calming tools.

For your reference, the trip from Dar to Iringa takes at least 6 hours in a private vehicle.

It’s mostly a two-lane road, recently rebuilt by the Chinese, so it’s in good condition for the most part.

Westbound and northbound buses leaving from Dar ply the same road (A7) until you get to Chalinze, which is about halfway, less than two hours, between Dar and Morogoro.

If you are going to Arusha, the bus will veer north on the A17.

Other notable destinations along this route are Saandani National Park, Pangani, Tanga, Lushoto, Kilimanjaro, and Moshi.

From Arusha, you can also take a bus to Mwanza and Kigoma, but once you’ve past the Ngorongoro Conservation Area, the roads are in extremely poor condition, and you are in for a bumpy ride.

If you continue on past Chalinze you’ll pass by Morogoro (also the turn off for Dodoma), the entry point into the Selous Game Reserve, Mikumi National Park, the old main gate to Udzungwa Mountains Parks, and Iringa, which is the turn off for Ruaha National Park.

Iringa is the place to explore the southern circuit, with a new campsite at the Msosa gate to the Uduzungwas (the Iringa side of the park) and the gateway to Ruaha (possibly Tanzania’s best park).

It is a great place to stay for a few days.

After Iringa, you’ll either go west, to Mbeya, or south, to Songea. Head to Mbeya if you want to either visit Lake Tanganyika, enter into Malawi, or head north to Kigoma.

North of Mbeya, the roads aren’t sealed, so it will be a long and very unpleasant trip.

If you want to see Lake Nyasa (a.k.a. Lake Malawi), take the bus to Songea.

Although you are within a stone’s throw of Mozambique, there are no official entry points into Mozambique.

Tanzania Buses Arusha, Dar es Salaam, Mbeya, Iringa, Mwanza, Moshi, Tanga, Nairobi, Mombasa, Kampala daily.

Finally, if you’re headed south of Dar, then you’ll take the B2.

This is the main route to the Selous and the Rufiji River.

Along the way, you can also stop in Kilwa, Lindi, and, finally, Mtwara. The road isn’t sealed the whole way, so, again, bring on a cushion.

Outside Dar, roads between other cities and villages are in very poor condition, although they are slowly being improved.

For instance, traveling from Arusha to Dodoma is slow.

It can be faster to return to Chalinze and then board a bus to Dodoma.

This is pretty much the case for any travel between cities that are not located along the road to Dar.

The border town of Namanga is a hectic outpost that epitomizes much of Africa.

The bus even waits here for you to cross the border.

You can even get off on the Kenyan side, walk across the border, and get on the bus again on the Tanzanian side.

From Dar by bus it is also possible to travel to Malawi, Uganda, and Rwanda.

See specific cities for more information about the bus lines that serve them.

Tahmeed Buses connect Mombasa with Tanga and Dar in Tanzania.

Royal Coach travels to Arusha, and is one of the nicest buses available.

Dar Express services many cities, including Nairobi, Kenya.

Sumry connect the beautiful southern part of Tanzania, Iringa and Mbeya to Dar and further S.W.

To and From Kenya: There are several bus services available between Tanzania and Kenya.

Buses regularly go from Mombasa to Dar es Salaam (12 hours), Nairobi to Dar es Salaam (about 13 hours), Nairobi to Arusha (5 hours), and Voi to Moshi.

Some bus companies originating in Arusha will drop you off at your hotel in Nairobi and also offer pick-ups at Nairobi’s international airport.

To and From Malawi: The border crossing between Tanzania and Malawi is at the Songwe River Bridge.

Direct buses between Dar es Salaam and Lilongwe depart several times a week and take around 27 hours.

Your other alternative is to get to the border crossing and take minibuses in either direction to the closest towns — Karonga in Malawi and Mbeya in Tanzania.

Spend the night and then continue on the next day. Both towns have regular long-distance bus services.

To and From Mozambique: The main border post is at Kilambo (Tanzania) which you can get to via minibus from Mtwara.

To cross the border requires a trip across the Ruvuma River and depending on the tides and the season, this could be a simple quick canoe trip or an hour long ferry ride. The border post in Mozambique is at Namiranga.

To and From Uganda: Daily buses travel from Kampala to Dar es Salaam (via Nairobi — so make sure you get a visa for Kenya to transit).

The bus trip takes at least 25 hours.

A more manageable crossing is from Kampala to Bukoba (on the shores of Lake Victoria) which gets you to Tanzania in about 7 hours.

You can also take a short 3 hour trip by bus from Bukoba (Tanzania) to the Ugandan border town of Masaka.

Scandinavian also runs buses from Moshi to Kampala (via nairobi).

To and From Rwanda: Regional coach services travels from Kigali to Dar es Salaam at least once a week, the trip takes about 36 hours and crosses into Uganda first.

Shorter trips between the Tanzania/Rwanda border at Rusumo Falls are possible but the security situation fluctuates so inquire locally in Benako (Rwanda) or Mwanza (Tanzania).

Buses also run at least once a day from Mwanza (it will take all day) to the border of Rwanda, and from there you can catch a minibus to Kigali.

Catching the bus from Mwanza means a ferry trip to start with so the schedule is fairly fixed.

To and From Zambia: Buses run a couple times a week between Dar es Salaam and Lusaka (about 30 hours) and between Mbeya and Lusaka (about 16 hours).

The border that is used most often is at Tunduma and you can get minibuses from Mbeya to Tunduma and then cross into Zambia and take public transport from there.

We wish we could say that train travel was a classic Tanzania experience, watching the landscapes roll by and getting a snapshot of local life, but the country’s rail lines are so under-maintained these days, and so often beset by delays and breakdowns, that it would be too much of a stretch – but if you get lucky, you’re likely to enjoy the ride.

Once planned privatization and upgrading programs are implemented, the situation is bound to improve.

The Tanzania – Zambia train service, known as TAZARA, operates trains three times a week between New Kapiri Mposhi, Zambia, and Dar es Salaam, leaving from Dar es Salaam on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays.

A domestic railroad network links the country’s major cities, including Kigoma, Mwanza, Dodoma, Tabora, and Dar es Salaam.

The domestic train service is usually unreliable, and ticket prices are affordable.

Ticket prices differ, however, according to ‘class’, typically first, second, and third.

First and second classes offer cabins with two and four beds, respectively.

Third class is open seating.

Hot meals and beverages are usually available from the dining car.

It is not uncommon for the train kitchen to purchase fresh produce at many of the stopping points along the way.

It is also possible to purchase fruit and snacks directly from local vendors who frequent the many train stations on each of Tanzania’s many train routes.

Train Tickets have to be booked in advance and we can supply tickets either way from Dar es Salaam to Kapiri Mposhi just outside Lusaka or the other way around from Zambia Kapiri Mposhi to Dar es Salaam.

Please be warned, the train is notoriously unreliable especially from south to north and can be 15 hours late getting into its destination.

It is a two day journey in any case, through the Selous National Reserve and we recommend you have enough time on your hands when deciding to use this form of transportation.

TAZARA covers a distance of 1,860km between Dar es Salaam and New Kapiri Mposhi stations, negotiating its way through many amazing topographic features and monuments, including game parks, thick jungles, mountains and steep valleys.

From what I hear quite a few construction workers including the Chinese got eaten by lions during construction.

From a low altitude of 14.06m above sea level at Kurasini Station, the line rises steeply to 500m at Mlimba and further up to a peak of 1789.43m at Uyole Station (the highest point of TAZARA) in Mbeya before cascading down to 1660m above sea level at Mwenzo (the highest point in Zambia) and runs at a relatively steady level up to New Kapiri-Mposhi where it settles at 1274.63m above sea level.

Tanzania Train Passenger Services
Mandated to provide the most efficient, effective and reliable mode of transport in the two partner states, TAZARA runs three types of passenger trains, i.e. Express, Ordinary and Special Trains.

Apart from conveying people, passenger trains also transport parcels and luggage using the parcel vans attached to the passenger trains.

Each parcel van can carry up to 15.7 metric tons of parcels and, depending on the demand, one or more vans can be attached to the train at a time.

Attached to each train are dining cars in which professional caterers serve international cuisines at very reasonable prices.

Tanzania Train Express Trains
TAZARA operates one pair of cross-border express passenger trains every Tuesday between Dar es Salaam in Tanzania and New Kapiri-Mposhi in Zambia, and vice-versa.

The express trains are known as the Kilimanjaro Express and Mukuba Express. It takes approximately 46 hours to travel between Dar es Salaam and New Kapiri Mposhi.

Passengers have the rare treat of viewing a variety of game along the way.

When traversing the mountainsides, passing though the tunnels, crossing rivers and gorges, passengers have a chance to appreciate the awesome and inspirational engineering works of the Chinese, who constructed the railway between 1970 and 1975. Express trains are recommended for international travelers.

A pair of Ordinary Passenger Trains, on the other hand, runs in each direction every Friday.

The ordinary trains stop at every serviceable railway station in the respective regions of Tanzania and Zambia.

Tanzania Train Commuter Trains
On 29th October 2012, TAZARA introduced Commuter Train Services in Tanzania’s port city of Dar es Salaam, covering a distance of 30km from Dar es Salaam main station to Mwakanga, on the outskirts of the city.

The Commuter Train Service was introduced at the request of the Tanzanian government, keen to ease the transport challenges in the city, especially during peak hours.

The government financed the initial costs of refurbishing the dilapidated coaches and locomotives to put them back into service having been discarded for years.

The Commuter Trains utilize TAZARA’s main track, transporting some 9,000 passengers every day, except weekends and public holidays when the service is not available.

TAZARA’s passenger train services are on very high demand.

TAZARA also happens to have very limited equipment available at the moment and, therefore, the number of trains currently in service is also limited.

Those factors imply that the passenger trains are usually fully booked, sometimes as much as two weeks before the travel date.

Therefore, it is important that you plan your journey with TAZARA long before your travel date.

Give it at least a month of advance planning. Book your seat or sleeping berth at least two weeks in advance.

Tanzania Trains Tazara Railways Tickets and Info to Zambia and Mbeya

Tanzania Trains Tazara Railways Tickets and Info to Zambia and Mbeya

Remember that you will need to purchase your ticket either a few days before the journey or on the actual day of travel.

Therefore, you need to choose the most convenient booking office, from where you will also buy your ticket.

If you have not bought your ticket in advance, but have made an advance booking, you need to arrive at the station earlier, say an hour or two before the Expected Departure Time (EDT).

In terms of getting to the station where you intend to board from, it is advisable that you ensure that you get on the earliest bus that would deliver you to that station at least two hours before the indicated EDT.

Tanzania Trains Tazara Railways Tickets and Info to Zambia and Mbeya

Tanzania Trains Tazara Railways Tickets and Info to Zambia and Mbeya

Our experience is that many passengers make mistakes by using public buses that depart late or delay along the way and end up reaching the boarding station too late and find the train has already left.

You have no control over public transport; neither does TAZARA have that control.

Therefore, play it safe. Look for the earliest and fastest means of transportation to get you to the boarding station.

Book your seat or sleeping berth at least two weeks in advance.

Tanzania Trains Tazara Railways Tickets and Info to Zambia and Mbeya

Tanzania Trains Tazara Railways Tickets and Info to Zambia and Mbeya

You booked in advance and acquired your ticket in good time. Now you are on Board.

Rest assured that travelling by train between Tanzania and Zambia is comparatively the safest mode of transport you can ever come across.

It is also the most interesting and relaxing mode of transport. Read books and relax. Make friends and chat. Walk around and stretch your legs. Enjoy refreshments and watch movies.

Dine and wine if you like. Enjoy the scenery, watch the wildlife and occasionally take a stroll and feel the freshness of Africa when the train stops. It is all part of the package.

Tanzania Trains Tazara Railways Tickets and Info to Zambia and Mbeya

Tanzania Trains Tazara Railways Tickets and Info to Zambia and Mbeya

However, whereas TAZARA ensures the highest safety standards in all train operations, passengers on board are urged to complement these efforts by abiding to the following precautions: No doors must be opened whilst the train is in motion.

Passengers must wait until the train has come to a complete stop before opening the exit doors.

Similarly, passengers must not jump onto or disembark from the train whilst it is still in motion. Excessive drinking of alcohol on the train is dangerous. Drunkenness impairs judgment and affects movements, which is not safe on the train.

Sticking out the head or limbs through windows could be dangerous due to jerking and abrupt stoppages of trains. It is not advisable to drink piped water.

Whilst every care is taken to fill the tanks on the train with clean water, its cleanliness cannot be guaranteed. It is therefore advisable that tap water is only used for washing and not drinking. Passengers are advised to drink bottled mineral water which is available for sale on the trains at all times.

Do not leave your compartment open and luggage unattended to at any time. Play it safe. Have the compartment locked by the train attendants whenever you leave your compartment.
