””We took the train from Kapiri Mposhi to Dar Es Salaam in May 2015. I absolute loved this experience but I must share a fair bit of warnings.

  • You must contact the company to book a sleeper (first class) car prior to your arrival and they only take kwacha (Zambia’s currency). They do not accept US Dollars, Euros, or CCs.
  • The train accommodations are anything from first class but that is the beauty of traveling. The accommodations are not glamorous and if you are on this train you aren’t the type of person who needs glamour anyway. Bring your own food and bring plenty of water to last you 4 days.

  • There is only one toilet so you might want to bring a pee bottle so you don’t have to walk to the toilet at night.

-Bring a headlamp, the light doesn’t always work.

-Be prepared for the “midnight train of death,” as I called it. The train goes a lot faster at night and the car will shake. Also, people when they board are looking to steal a bunk and will shake your door if it is not locked. If you buy the whole compartment like we did bring something to tie the door in the night so you don’t have stragglers.

  • Be prepared to have a true eye-opening experience with the local culture. You will get to see parts of Africa many travelers do not get to see and it is life-changing and amazing. Get off the train at the stations, talk to the people. My favorite parts where talking with the village children at each station.
  • Bring butter packets, cutlery, soap (Lots of soap), bread, and anything else you might think the children would like. I was completely unprepared and when I had children all along the way ask for butter and soap I felt helpless I couldn’t help them. I gave all my soap out at the first station.

  • Change your money when you are crossing the border, we didn’t do this and found out magically once you go into tanzania they no longer will except your Zambian money even though its the same train ride. So, if you want a Fanta get some shillings and vice versa the other way.

  • The train will not be on time and will probably be at least two days late. Plan for 4 days and if you get to Dar Es Salaam early then enjoy the city and go to the carver’s market and see the amazing Ebony wood cravings.

  • This train was one of my favorite highlights during my 4 weeks in Africa, I would highly recommend it to those who aren’t expecting amenities, are prepared to not shower for a couple days, aren’t in a rush, and who are looking to feel a real since of adventure 1950s style.””
