Tazara passenger train services are on very high demand.

These factors imply that the passenger trains are usually fully booked, sometimes as much as four weeks before the travel date.

Therefore, it is important that you plan your journey with TAZARA long before your travel date.

Give it at least a month of advance planning.

Book your seat or sleeping berth at least four weeks in advance.

Visas:

You need visas to visit both Zambia & Tanzania. Although tourist visas can be bought at border points & airports, it can be better to buy them in advance from the relevant embassy, see

In terms of getting to the station where you intend to board from, it is advisable that you ensure that you get on the earliest bus that would deliver you to that station at least two hours before the indicated EDT.

Tazara Train Bookings Ticket Prices Fares Reservations Time Tables

Tazara Train Bookings Ticket Prices Fares Reservations Time Tables

Our experience is that many passengers make mistakes by using public buses that depart late or delay along the way and end up reaching the boarding station too late and find the train has already left.

This is the case for passengers connecting from Lusaka and the Copperbelt to New Kapiri-Mposhi.

It is also the case in Dar es Salaam where road traffic congestion’s are rife.

You have no control over public transport; neither does TAZARA have that control. Therefore, play it safe.

https://web.facebook.com/tazarasite/videos/1120782761265690/

Look for the earliest and fastest means of transportation to get you to the boarding station.

Project Concept / Idea.
Zanzibar is one of the fastest growing tourist destinations in the world. Its beaches are lined with resorts, hotels and marine centres.

The famous Stone Town is full of galleries, guest houses, restaurants and boutiques. The beautiful countryside however is completely devoid of any development.

Buy Zanzibar Business Property 22 Acres Land Plot For Sale

Buy Zanzibar Business Property 22 Acres Land Plot For Sale

What is lacking in the recreational package offered to both tourists and Zanzibar residents is a good club with sports- and entertainment facilities of adequate size.

The proposed Botanic Country Resort aims at filling in these gaps: a large entertainment centre with various associated facilities in the middle of the countryside.

This development has been initiated by ZanzibarMagic Company Limited.

Zanzibar is a new destination in the tourist market.

Only in recent years has it opened itself to tourism.

Due to its geographical position it was for hundreds of years a cosmopolitan central place for commerce between Alexandria and the Cape of Good Hope.

Sailors, Pirates, Explorers and Commercial travelers from all over the world came here.

The Island offers plenty of interesting historical sites, including the Stone Town which is under UNESCOS list of protected heritage sites.

Travelers have a craving to experience a new unique travel destination where very few people have traveled before.

We have the experience and knowledge of the Islands environment and are acquitted with the service including having personal contacts and an understanding of the culture on the Island.

People would buy the service / product as we would offer a genuine authentic service rather then the mass tourism product being offered by the competition.

We shall have the advantage over competition as we expect to handle both ends of the service ourselves without using any middle parties from start to finish including accommodation, catering, tours and activities on the Island.

Apart from tourists, we also expect to handle a lot of the local market too.

Infrastructure and accessibility are growing with future opportunities set to grow given the Islands natural attributed back ground, interesting agriculture, white sand beaches, marine life (much of which is unique) and friendly people.

These attractions represent the primary significant advantage in marketing holidays to Zanzibar.

Location and Locality:
Zanzibar and Tanzania are one of the fastest growing Tourist Destinations after South Africa in Sub Saharan Africa.

Research and investigations on the possibilities to set up a country resort resulted in a feasibility study written in close cooperation with the “Zanzibar Investment Promotion Agency”.

On the basis of the study a plot in Tunguu has been chosen and allocated to the Botanic Country Resort for development.

The choice of Tunguu site prevailed over other possible locations because of its excellent accessibility, its central location, present infrastructure and vegetation.

Infrastructure
Zanzibar International Airport (ZNZ)
The airport has a 2,462m runway that in 2001 handled 68 342 international passengers in 1 795 movements (42 633 were non-scheduled services).

The domestic passenger services handled 90,910 passengers in 2001 (77 224 passengers in non-scheduled services) by a total of 1,036 aircraft movements.

The design process for extending the runway to 3 000 m (US$ 2 million investment) and resurfacing the existing runway (US$ 2.4 million) are expected to be completed by the end of 2004. (World Bank).

Civil work is currently taking place.

The terminal building is now being designed so as to separate domestic and international traffic and to plan for an overall upgrading.

Our location needs will be met with the acquiring of the 2 parcels of land in Tunguu, Zanzibar, and we are also planning to acquire more adjacent land next to us if need be, we really have enough as it is.

We will own the land and a land lease is paid to the government on a long term lease.

This area is desirable due to its well developed infrastructure on site and in the whole area, a good tarmac road to the site only 20 minutes drive from the Stone Town and harbour and within easy access to beach and tour routes, main power line electricity is already available and sweet water through 3 wells is running, climate and environment is excellent favoring fast growing vegetation, new businesses and institutions, governmental and private offices are opening up down the road, plenty of labour and raw materials and supplies are available locally and the surrounding areas population has a bigger mixture of cultures who are more open to modern touristic development projects compared to some other parts of the island, plentiful of small wildlife and birdlife exists on the plot and we are not restricted to noise levels controls being in a commercial area.

The project will have more than enough space with over 20 acres.

Precipitation and soil conditions favor fast growing and lush vegetation.

Development has already begun, and fencing, walls and roads have been constructed including drainage and sewage, including all the following assets.

The 20 acres of land is enough for any future developments. There is enough land around the site for Future expansion.

There is no Golf Course on the Island for example.

If the right partners were found in the future to invest with the current sponsors, a professional “golf course” on the Island would be a goldmine, or perhaps a “casino”.

More land has already been acquired directly in front of the plot. On this plot the Staff House has been built and is currently the Country House which operates with customers already being able to get a bed at the facility.

There are basically two types of buildings architecturally discernable. Both types are conceived in local materials; mud/lime plastered coral stone, bush-poles structures and thatched roofs.

The entrance and storied buildings make a “massive” impression with inverted concealed
tin roofs behind parapets, the other buildings have light-weight steep roofs, optimally
ventilated and resting on bush-poles “porticos”.

Greetings.

We’ve just launched our campaign to fight the unfounded Ebola fears and their impact on safari tourism.

Ignorant or rather shall we say uneducated people don’t realize that East and southern Africa, where most safaris are conducted, are just as far from the outbreak area as Europe or South America.

The Ebola virus is not airborne and only spreads if people come in contact with the bodily fluids —such as blood, sweat or saliva— of an infected person.

As there are no confirmed Ebola cases in any major safari countries, the current risk of exposure is very low.

All have strict precautionary measures in place, comparable to those of countries in Europe and Northern America.

This makes the negative impact on the industry quite unnecessary and unfortunate.

Over the past weeks, several leading safari companies took the initiative to offer an amended cancellation policy in the unlikely event of an Ebola outbreak in their country.

We’re using our network to create global media attention for it.

The Ebola outbreak in West Africa has been in the news a lot lately and has understandably caused some concern among travelers who are considering or have booked a trip to Africa.
We want to first of all put your mind at ease.

The media has greatly hyped up people’s fears and exaggerated the risk of Ebola.
We put things in perspective in our blog posts, and below you will find another short summary regarding why it is completely safe to travel to Tanzania and even book a trip for any time in the future without any worries about Ebola.

Ebola is a scary disease and should be taken very seriously. But outside of the outbreak area, the real risk for travelers is, effectively, zero. The reasons below explain why.

Ebola isn’t airborne and doesn’t spread like the flu or tuberculosis.

The virus only spreads if people come in direct contact with the bodily fluids —such as blood, sweat or saliva— of an infected person.

Additionally, Ebola doesn’t spread until an infected person gets sick and shows symptoms, such as extreme vomiting, severe headaches or high fevers.

The safari countries are far away from the outbreak area.

Eastern and southern Africa, where most safaris are conducted, are at least 3,000 miles / 4,800 km away from the outbreak area; Europe and South America are closer.

No cancellation fees for Ebola on Tanzania Safaris Zanzibar Travel Holidays

No cancellation fees for Ebola on Tanzania Safaris Zanzibar Travel Holidays

There were more direct flights from West Africa to Europe than to most safari countries.

This is true of the period before flights to West Africa were banned by virtually all airlines, including those flying to the safari countries.

West Africa and the safari countries are so far apart that most travel is conducted by air. Only a small portion of people in Africa can afford such travel.

All safari countries have enacted strict precautionary measures.
Commercial flights to Ebola outbreak countries have been cancelled.

Most safari countries have banned entry for travelers arriving from affected West African countries.

Others have mandated multi-week health surveillance. Emergency isolation centers have been set aside and health screening is in place at most airports and major border posts. More info about the precautionary measures per safari country.

No country has issued an Ebola related travel warning against any of the safari countries
Government travel advisories are responsible for warning their citizens against travel related risks.

They are very professional and restrained when it comes to taking precautions for travelers. If there was an increased or significant Ebola risk in any of the safari countries, they would have included it in their travel advice.

It is possible to book a safari with free Ebola related cancellation
Any financial worries can be eliminated by booking a tour with fee Ebola related cancellation. See the above list of companies for more info.

As there is no Ebola in any of the major safari countries, there currently is no risk
The outbreak began in December 2013, which is 11 months ago.

It hasn’t spread into East or southern Africa since, and it is extremely unlikely it will. Isolated cases, as we’ve seen in neighboring countries, Europe and the US, can always occur.

But so far, these haven’t resulted in new outbreaks.

All countries have successfully contained the virus, including third world countries such as Nigeria and Senegal, which have been officially declared Ebola free.

No cancellation fees for Ebola

This info is accurate as of September 22nd 2014. For recent developments please contact the Embassy of the country in question.

Botswana
Entry has been suspended for travelers who have visited Liberia, Guinea, Nigeria and Sierra Leone in the last 30 days.

Kenya
With the exception of Kenyan citizens and doctors or health care professionals supporting the containment of the outbreak, entry has been suspended for people traveling through or from the countries of Liberia, Guinea and Sierra Leone.

Namibia
Entry has been suspended for all of those travelling from countries affected by the Ebola virus, with the exception of Namibian citizens.

Rwanda
Entry is not allowed to any travelers who have visited Guinea, Liberia and Sierra Leone within 22 days. Health screening is in place at all border posts. Non-residents registering a fever will not be allowed entry to Rwanda.

South Africa
South Africa will not allow admittance to any foreign citizens arriving from Ebola affected countries in west Africa. South African citizens will be allowed to re-enter, but only after being subject to strict screening.

Tanzania
All major border posts have mandatory health screening in place, including all international airports. Emergency isolation centers have been set aside for suspected cases.

Uganda
People traveling from affected west African countries and the DR Congo must undergo health screening at Entebbe Airport. An isolation center has been established at the airport for any suspected Ebola cases.

Zambia
Zambia has banned entrance to all travelers from affected west African countries.

Zimbabwe
Travelers from affected countries must undergo mandated 21-day health surveillance for Ebola symptoms.

We are so confident that there will be no Ebola outbreak in Tanzania that we are prepared to amend our standard terms and conditions to offer a guaranteed 100% refund to all clients who have booked with us in advance, and end up having to cancel or postpone in the unlikely event that the Ebola outbreak spreads to Tanzania.

This amended cancellation policy will apply to any new or existing bookings if the sole reason for cancellation or postponement is an Ebola outbreak, which we define as follows:

An Ebola outbreak must be called and confirmed by the WHO. It is not one or two isolated, imported cases of Ebola from people arriving from affected areas, and merely being treated or quarantined locally.

An Ebola outbreak is when there are multiple (two or more) confirmed cases of NEW INFECTIONS that have occured WITHIN Tanzania (or any adjacent destination on your itinerary booked through us), excluding direct family members or health care workers who have had direct contact with isolated Ebola victims, where the spread of the virus remains contained within the treatment facility and does not affect the general public.

(It is important to stress that many countries including the US have already had one or two isolated cases of imported Ebola victims being treated, and in some cases infection has spread to direct family members or health care workers who have had careless, close personal contact with the victim. In none of these cases has this resulted in an Ebola outbreak amongst the general public.

In the recent American case, all 48 people who had contact with the victim were monitored and NONE of them contracted Ebola, apart from the original nurses who treated him before they realised he had Ebola. Again, this puts the risk in perspective.)

Should an Ebola outbreak occur in Tanzania as per above definition, you are entitled to cancel or postpone your trip at no charge, subject to the following conditions:

  1. That there is a genuine and confirmed Ebola outbreak in Tanzania or other adjacent destination on your itinerary as booked with KianGO Adventure Safaris.
  2. That a trip postponement is subject to availability for the new travel dates. Your trip can be postponed without penalty for up to 1 year from original date of travel.

  3. That you have paid by credit card (this is advisable since most credit cards automatically also include basic travel insurance) since we will simply reverse the transaction on your credit card to process the refund. This avoids unnecessary foreign currency conversion fees and bank charges associated with refunds by bank transfer.

If you have paid by bank transfer, we can still refund you but your refund amount will be subject to deduction of the applicable bank charges and foreign currency conversion fees.

  1. All clients are required to take out comprehensive travel insurance, and should first claim from their travel insurance in case of an Ebola outbreak.

This protects us in the highly unlikely event of an Ebola outbreak, because some third party suppliers may not have the same generous cancellation policy in place and will charge us cancellation fees. We will then refund whatever amount is not covered by your travel insurance.

  1. That you understand a change in dates may result in a minor change in rates if third party rates have been increased, and fall in a new season or new year.

Our own rates will not be affected (for up to 12 months) but third party suppliers such as accommodation providers may implement annual increases or seasonal (high and low season) rates that may affect your amended travel dates. Flight costs may also be subject to change.

  1. Flights can only be covered by this agreement if you allow us to book refundable or amendable flight tickets for you.

With most airlines, their cheapest ticket class is not refundable and allows no changes, so if we are asked to book any of your flights and you insist that we book you on the cheapest available flights, the cost of flights will be excluded from this refund offer.

Our advice is that you book your own flights online and book the slightly more expensive airfares or ticket option, with more flexible booking terms and a full refund policy in place.

Most airfares (even low cost airlines) also allow a cancellation insurance option at a small extra cost. If we book your flights and you opt not to take the cancellation insurance or more flexible ticket option, your flights will not be covered by this agreement.

  1. This applies only to cancellations or postponements due to a confirmed Ebola outbreak in your travel destination as booked by KianGO Adventure Safaris.

For all other cancellations or postponements, our regular terms and conditions and standard cancellation policy will apply.

We hope this offer of a 100% refund will set your mind at ease, that you are not taking a financial risk by booking a trip to Africa during this time.

Why are you so confident? Isn’t Ebola very serious?

Yes and no.

It is serious in three, small, West African countries called Sierra Leone, Liberia and Guinea.

In the rest of Africa, the risk of Ebola is not serious at all. Here is a summary of some points that will explain why we are so confident.

If you have not read our previous blog posts or still have doubts about travelling to Tanzania, these points will hopefully help to put things in perspective and ease any concerns you may have regarding Ebola:

Ebola is not airborne and does not spread very easily.

The only people who get infected are those with direct contact with Ebola victims or bodies, such as direct family members or health care workers.

You won’t get Ebola from someone on a plane – if someone has contagious Ebola they won’t even be on a plane.

And simply being close to someone with Ebola will not spread the virus.

South Africa has been denying entry to all visitors from the three affected nations in West Africa, and actively screens all incoming passengers at all airports. The same is true for Botswana and Zimbabwe. This means it is highly unlikely that we will see Ebola cases entering Southern Africa.

At the time of writing, in over 10 months since the start of the outbreak (the first 5-6 months with no screening measures in place) absolutely no cases of Ebola have occurred in Tanzania (nor anywhere else in Southern or East Africa).

This shows how low the risk is and how exaggerated the media-generated fears have been.

Those countries that have had isolated cases of Ebola (usually imported cases of health workers returning from West Africa) have all successfully contained the virus and it is has not led to an outbreak of Ebola in any of these countries, including third world countries like Nigeria and Senegal, which are now completely Ebola free after successfully containing their few isolated cases.

In the first 10 months since the outbreak, 4500 deaths and 9000 cases of Ebola have been reported, almost exclusively in West Africa.

This sounds like a lot, but during this same time, up to 40,000 Americans are estimated to have died from the common flu, and up to 500,000 people are estimated to have died from malaria worldwide.

This is not to trivialise the deaths due to Ebola but puts the crisis and figures in perspective. Ebola remains a tiny, insignificant blib on the list of the world’s most serious diseases to worry about.

Geographically, cities like Miami, London, Paris, Lisbon, and many other European and American destinations are situated much closer to the center of the Ebola outbreak than Arusha, Tanzania.

Africa is not one country but a huge continent and the distances are massive.

You will be thousands of miles from the nearest Ebola case, and there is no more risk of being infected with Ebola by travelling to Tanzania as there is from travelling to Europe or the US.

With the world’s airports and health care systems on high alert now, the chances that this Ebola outbreak will spread to other countries (beyond isolated, imported cases as we have already seen in many countries and have all been contained) is virtually zero.

Ebola is nothing new, it has been with us for many years and we have seen many previous outbreaks.

It is much less serious than the bird flu epidemic we saw a few years ago, simply because it is not airborne, not very contagious and easy to prevent infection with even the most basic precautions.

May we also point out that most of the Tanzania safaris Zanzibar Travel Holidays team happen to live in Tanzania with our families and we can honestly say that we have zero fear of contracting Ebola.

Not because we are ignorant, but because we are informed. To date, EVERY SINGLE Ebola-related travel postponement or trip cancellation has been entirely pointless and an unfortunate waste, not just for us and the local tourism industry in terms of lost revenue, but for the travellers concerned, who have missed out on a fantastic trip, and may end up spending more money later on to do a similar trip (for example, the TSH-USD exchange rate is very favourable for foreign tourists at the moment – Tanzania currently offers the best value for money that it has in many years).

In closing, our advice regarding Ebola is well-researched and based on WHO fact sheets, not media hype.

We’ve had endorsements from healthcare experts with experience in infectious diseases and public health care in the UK as well as in Tanzania.

We call attention to the unnecessary impact of the outbreak on safari tourism, and assure people the current Ebola risk in eastern and southern Africa is effectively, zero.
The outlets below published articles that reached millions of readers, informing them there is no Ebola risk in the major safari countries and that it is absolutely safe to go on safari.Despite the media attention, the issue still is not solved.
Depending on how the Ebola crisis develops.
For as long as the issue prevails, we’ll keep fighting the misconceptions with the help of the media.
The media outlets that covered the news (in order of readership):

Don’t believe the media hype, and don’t let the fear of Ebola spoil your African adventure.

We look forward to welcoming you to safe, sunny, Ebola-free Tanzania for the safari of a lifetime!

With kind regards,

It is my understanding that Tanzania Shillings (TZS) are legal tender in Tanzania, this is the law but the government of Tanzania itself does not accept TZS for payment ranging from park and conservation fees, to working permits and residents permits.

This is because machines to check counterfeit money are in USD$!!!!

Tanzania Zanzibar Safari Holidays and Travel in $USD

Tanzania Zanzibar Safari Holidays and Travel in $USD

Tanzania Zanzibar Safari Holidays and Travel in $USD

This forces many operators to quote and accept travel safari payments etc, only in USD and for those of us accepting TZS, exchange rate might be higher than you expected and we strongly advice you buy your own dollars.

Please note exchange rates in Arusha, Dar es Salaam and Zanzibar etc… are high better come with $USD cash from your home country.

Tanzania Zanzibar Safari Holidays and Travel in $USD

Our advice is that you come along to Tanzania in USD$ which is acceptable everywhere, get yourselves different nominations of $1, $5, 10, $20, $50 and $100.- USD notes preferable not older than the year 2006.

Exchange rate for the smaller notes of $1.- USD, $5.- USD, $10.- USD and $20.- USD always get less than the larger notes of $50.- USD or $100.- USD

Tanzania Zanzibar Safari Holidays and Travel in $USD

Tanzania Zanzibar Safari Holidays and Travel in $USD

Many places do not accept the older notes and/or they may only give you a worse rate.

Further more for instance for the Ngorongoro Crater they only accept prepaid credit cards paid in USD in Arusha at their headquarters or at banks such as in Karatu.

You may pay to enter the park with your credit card, but no cash is accepted at the entry points.

The United States dollar (sign: $; code: USD; also abbreviated US $ and referred to as the U.S. dollar, American dollar or US Dollar) is the official currency of the United States and its overseas territories.

It is a Federal Reserve Note and consists of 100 smaller cent units.

The U.S. dollar is fiat money. It is the currency most used in international transactions and is the world’s most dominant reserve currency.

Several countries use it as their official currency, and in many others it is the de facto currency.

Besides the United States, it is also used as the sole currency in two British Overseas Territories: the British Virgin Islands and the Turks and Caicos islands.

Cash, travellers’ cheques or credit cards in Tanzania?
The question therefore is: in what form should you carry your money to Tanzania, ie: should you bring travellers’ cheques, cash, or rely solely on your credit card and use that to get money out of cashpoints in Tanzania?

Tanzania Zanzibar Safari Holidays and Travel in $USD

Travellers’ cheques in Tanzania
Travellers’ cheques are no longer acceptable in Tanzania so don’t bring these.

Bringing cash to Tanzania
Foreign currency can be imported and exported without limit to and from Tanzania. Dollars and, to a lesser extent, sterling and euros are the best currencies to bring.

Cash is very useful for those occasions when the Tanzanian shilling is not accepted, such as when paying for upmarket hotel rooms and air tickets, both of which, officially at least, must be paid for in hard currency.

The disadvantage with cash is that it is the riskiest way to carry money.

Tanzania Zanzibar Safari Holidays and Travel in $USD

Tanzania Zanzibar Safari Holidays and Travel in $USD

Credit cards in Tanzania
The other option is credit/debit cards, which are the easiest, lightest and most invisible to carry around.

There are now plenty of banks in Tanzania with ATMs that take foreign cards – making the task of getting Tanzanian shillings now very simple.

Credit cards are also accepted in major tourist hotels, restaurants, gift shops and airline offices and their usefulness is growing every day.

Visa is probably the more useful card in that you can withdraw money from more ATMs than with MasterCard.

Tanzania Zanzibar Safari Holidays and Travel in $USD

Tanzania Zanzibar Safari Holidays and Travel in $USD

You do, of course, run the risk that the cash machines will reject them or, worse, swallow them, leaving you stuck in Africa with no means of support.

So for this reason we recommend bringing a couple of cards (assuming you have a couple of bank accounts!) just in case you lose one.

We advocate bringing credit/debit cards (preferably one Visa and one MasterCard, to increase your chances of being able to withdraw cash from an ATM), with a few hundred dollars in cash as back-up in case something happens to your card.

Actually use cards as backup and cash as guaranteed plan A.

How many dollars you bring, of course, depends on how much you’ve paid for in advance, how long you are staying in the region, and what you hope to do while you are there.

Changing money in Tanzania is not a problem in most populated areas.

Hotels usually have a worse rate than banks, so you should go to a Forex office (aka Bureau de Change) or bank if possible. You may have to wait in line for a bit.

Banks in Tanzania are just like banks in the US or the UK.

ATMs (cash points) are located in almost all banks with 24-hour access and give the same exchange rate as the bank.
They may require a Visa card.

ATM only delivers Tanzania Shillings……
Also make sure that your notes are clean, no rips or tears or pieces missing.

Also don’t accept old TZ shillings if ripped as only banks will exchange them and the line ups here are long.

The markets are the worst with low denomination TZ shillings bills being in pretty poor repair.

Sometimes you have to say No and get a newer bill.

This is an African lament though and not restricted to the East of the continent.

http://www.madeintanzaniasafaris.com

Frederick Courteney Selous was born in December 31, 1851 in Regents Park, London, as one of the five children of an aristocratic family, third generation of French-Huguenot heritage.

His father, Frederick Lokes Slous (original spelling) (1802-1892), was notably Chairman of the London Stock Exchange and his mother, Ann Holgate Sherborn (1827-1913), was a published poetess.

He had three sisters, Florence (b. 1850), Annie Berryman (b. 1853), Sybil Jane (b. 1862), and one brother, Edmund Selous (1857-1934), who became a famous ornithologist.

The love for outdoors and wildlife was only shared by his brother, however all of the family were artistically inclined, beside being successful in business.

At 42, Selous settled in Worplesdon, England, and married 20 year old Marie Catherine Gladys Maddy (b. 1874), daughter of a clergyman Canon Henry William Maddy, and had two sons, Capt.

Frederick Hatherley Bruce Selous (1898-1918) and Harold Sherborn Selous. A little known fact is that F. C. Selous also had children by at least 3 African wives.

He married a Ndebele woman from Southern Rhodesia now Zimbabwe by whom he had a daughter Magdalen Selous born in1874, a Tswana woman from Bechuanaland now Botswana, who was a sister of the Bamangwato King Khama III, by whom he had a son John Selous born in 1900 and a Manyika woman from Eastern Zimbabwe by whom he had a son, Frederick Fisher (influential settlers could register the births of their half-caste children under different last names in order to protect their reputations .

Frederick Fisher was born after his marriage to Marie and maintained correspondence with F. C. Selous for years). Although he never publicly acknowledged his half-caste children, he did pay for their education at South African coloured institutions.

He also left them a considerable amount of property in Bulawayo and Salisbury (now Harare).

However, a substantial part of the will related to property in the exclusive wealthy Borrowdale area of Salisbury was declared null and void and then appropriated by the white colonial administration, using the fact that these children could not be recognized as legal heirs because their mothers were not married in church or court, but rather according to African traditional custom which was not recognized as legally binding to white men.

Youth
From a young age, Frederick Courteney Selous was drawn by stories of the times explorers and their adventures.

Furthermore, while in school, he started establishing personal collections of various bird eggs and butterflies and studied well natural history sciences.

One account, by no means solitary but typical of his behavior, is recalled by his school master at Northamptonshire when he was ten years old “ … on going around the dormitories to see that all was in order, discovered Freddy Selous, laying bare on the floor clothed only in his night shirt.

On being asked the cause of this curious behaviour, he replied “Well, you see, one day I am going to be a hunter in Africa and I am just hardening myself to sleep on the ground. ”

In January 15, 1867, F.C. Selous, at seventeen, was one of the fortunate survivors of the grim Regents Park tragedy, well documented in The Times, when the ice covering the local lake broke with around two hundred skaters, leaving forty dead by drowning and freezing. He escaped by crawling on broken ice slabs to the shore.

He was educated at Rugby, England and abroad in Germany and Austria and prepared to be a doctor, but not followed, as this path was more bestowed upon him by his parents. His love for natural history led to his resolve to study the ways of wild animals in their native haunts.

His imagination was strongly fueled by the African exploration and hunting literature, Dr. David Livingstone and William Charles Baldwin in particular, only as to later to become a similar if not greater hero and fictional character himself.

African exploration
Going to South Africa when he was nineteen, he travelled from the Cape of Good Hope to Matabeleland, which he reached early in 1872, and where he was granted permission by Lobengula King of the Ndebele to shoot game anywhere in his dominions.

Tanzania Tourist Industry is as Dead as Captain F.C Selous

Tanzania Tourist Industry is as Dead as Captain F.C Selous

From then until 1890, with a few brief intervals spent in England, Selous hunted and explored over the then little-known regions north of the Transvaal and south of the Congo Basin, shooting elephants, and collecting specimens of all kinds for museums and private collections.

His travels added largely to the knowledge of the country now known as Zimbabwe.

He made valuable ethnological investigations, and throughout his wanderings – often among people who had never previously seen a white man – he maintained cordial relations with the chiefs and tribes, winning their confidence and esteem, notably so in the case of Lobengula.

In 1890 Selous entered the service of the British South Africa Company, at the request of magnate Cecil Rhodes, acting as guide to the pioneer expedition to Mashonaland. Over 400 miles of road were constructed through a country of forest, mountain and swamp, and in two and a half months Selous took the column safely to its destination.

He then went east to Manica, concluding arrangements there which brought the country under British control.

Coming to England in December 1892, he was awarded the Founder’s Medal of the Royal Geographical Society in recognition of his extensive explorations and surveys, of which he gave a summary in “Twenty Years in Zambesia”.

Military career

Selous (front seated) leader of H Troops of Bulawayo Field Force, Matabeleland, 1890s. Rhodesia and World War I

He returned to Africa to take part in the First Matabele War (1893), being wounded during the advance on Bulawayo. It was during this advance that he first met fellow scout Frederick Russell Burnham, who had only just arrived in Africa and who continued on with the small scouting party to Bulawayo and observed the self-destruction of the Ndebele settlement as ordered by King Lobengula.

Selous returned to England, married, and in 1896 the couple settled on an estate in Matabeleland when the Second Matabele War broke out. He took a prominent part in the fighting which followed, serving as a leader in the Bulawayo Field Force, and published an account of the campaign entitled Sunshine and Storm in Rhodesia (1896).

It was during this time that he met and fought along side Robert Baden-Powell who was then a Major and newly appointed to the British Army headquarters staff in Matabeleland.

In World War I, at the age of 64, Selous participated in the fighting in East Africa, joining as a Captain in the uniquely composed 25th (Frontiersmen) Battalion, Royal Fusiliers, being awarded the Distinguished Service Order in 1916.

Death and legacy
On January 4, 1917, Selous was fighting a bush-war on the banks of the Rufiji river, against the German colonial Schutztruppen, in odds outnumbered one to five.

That morning, in combat, during a minor engagement, while creeping forward, he raised his head and binoculars to locate the enemy, and was shot in the head by a German sniper. He was killed instantly.

Shortly after, as an act of gallantry, General von Lettow-Vorbeck, known as “The Lion of Afrika,” the supreme commander of the German colonial army, himself an admirer of Selous, wrote a personal condolence note, apologizing for the “ungentlemanly death” incurred by D.S.O. Captain Selous at the hand of the German Army.

President Theodore Roosevelt
His close friend, American president Theodore Roosevelt, upon getting the news, wrote:

“ He led a singularly adventurous and fascinating life, with just the right alternations between the wilderness and civilization.

He helped spread the borders of his people’s land. He added much to the sum of human knowledge and interest.

He closed his life exactly as such a life ought to be closed, by dying in battle for his country while rendering her valiant and effective service.

Who could wish a better life or a better death, or desire to leave a more honourable heritage to his family and his nation? ”

He was buried under a tamarind tree, nearby the place of his death, in today’s Selous Game Reserve, Tanzania, in a modest, flat stone grave with a simple bronze plaque reading:

CAPTAIN F.C. SELOUS D.S.O., 25TH ROYAL FUSILIERS, KILLED IN ACTION 4.1.17.

The year following his death, sadly ironic, on exact same day, January 4, 1918, his son, Capt. Frederick Bruce Hatharlay MC, same rank as his father, was killed in combat also by the German army, while serving abroad too, as pilot with Royal Flying Corps, in a mission flight over Menin Road, France.

As part of his African military legacy and morale, an elite Rhodesian military group, the Selous Scouts, were baptised so in his honour.

Selous as a hunter, naturalist and conservationist

A studio portrait of young Selous with his Boer 4 bore elephant gun and African spear, 1870s. Beside his powerful ties, like the ones with Theodore Roosevelt and Cecil Rhodes, military achievements or books he left behind, he is mostly remembered as one of world’s most revered hunters, as he went in pursuit of big game hunting not only into his southern African homelands but also reputed wildernesses worldwide, subsequently.

His youth exploits are filled with accounts of trespassing, poaching and brawling, almost all within romanticised and humorous portrayal, but one in particular, in 1870, stands out as more serious: when in Wiesbaden, Prussia, he knocked unconscious a Prussian game warden who tackled him while stealing buzzard eggs for his collection, and had to leave the country at once in order to avoid imprisonment.

Then he moved to Austria, and when in Salzburg he went big game hunting for the first time, in the nearby Alps, he shot two chamois. On September 4, 1871, at the age of nineteen, he left England with £400 in his pocket, determined to earn his living as a professional elephant hunter, and by the age of twenty five he was known far and wide in South Africa as one of the most successful ivory hunters of the day.

Selous journeyed in pursuit of big game to Europe (Bavaria, Germany in 1870, Transylvania, Romania in 1899, Mull Island, Scotland in 1894, Sardinia in 1902, Norway in 1907), Asia (Turkey, Persia, Caucasus in 1894-95, 1897, 1907), North America (Wyoming, Rocky Mountains in 1897 and 1898, Eastern Canada in 1900-1901, 1905, Alaska and Yukon in 1904, 1905) and the “dark continent” in a territory that extends from today’s South Africa and Namibia all the way up into central Sudan where he collected virtually every specimen of all medium and large African mammal species.

Surprisingly to many, he never hunted in India, a very popular destination with British sportsmen of the day, even more so when in fact at the given time it was the golden age of tiger hunting and shikaris.

Theodore Roosevelt and Selous in Africa, ca 1909. In 1909-1910, Selous accompanied American ex-president Teddy Roosevelt in his famous African safari.

Contrary to popular belief, Selous did not lead Theodore Roosevelt’s 1909 expedition to British East Africa, the Congo and Egypt. While Selous was a member of this expedition from time to time and helped organize the logistics of the safari, it was in fact led by R. J. Cunninghame. Roosevelt wrote of Selous:

“ Mr. Selous is the last of the big game hunters of Southern Africa; the last of the mighty hunters whose experience lay in the greatest hunting ground which this world has seen since civilised man has appeared herein. ”

In 1907, F.C. Selous founded The Shikar Club, a big-game hunters association, together with two other British Army Captains, Charles Edward Radclyffe and P. B. Vanderbyl, and regularly met at the posh Savoy Hotel in London.

President was the Earl of Lonsdale. Another founding member was the artist, explorer and biographer of Selous John Guille Millais.

He was a rifleman icon, and a valued expert in firearms. Early in his hunting career, in mid 1870s, for a gun, Selous favoured a four bore black powder muzzleloader for killing elephant, a 13 lbs short barreled musket firing a quarter pound bullet at with as much as 20 drams (540 grains) of black powder, one of the largest hunting caliber fabricated, literally a small hand cannon.

He could wield it even from horseback. Between 1874-1876, with that gun, he slew exactly seventy-eight elephants, but eventually, a double loading incident together with other recoil problems from it, and he finally gave it up as to “upsetting my nerve”.

Use of a ten bore muzzleloader was made to hunt lions.

After black powder muzzleloaders behemoths became obsolete, and metal cased cartridges and smokeless gun powder came into advent despite the fact that he was bombarded with gifts from the finest London gunmakers in hopes of advertisement, and indeed he tried many but was to be found accompanied in his hunt by two rifles, single shot, falling block Farquharson action, Metford barelled rifle in two calibers he loved best: a Romanian .256 Mannlicher for smaller game and a .450 Nitro Express for larger game.

His favorite gun makers were Gibbs of Bristol and Holland & Holland of London.[16].

There are quotes as to how Selous was in fact not a crack shot, but a rather ordinary marksman, affirmation yet whom to most agree as being solely another personal statement of modesty from Selous himself.

Regardless, he remains a rifleman iconic figure, and following in tradition of others, German gunmaker Blaser and Italian gunmaker Perugini Visini chose to name their top line safari rifles after him, the Selous.

Naturalist and conservationist
Many of the Selous trophies entered into museums and international taxidermy and natural-history collections, notably the Natural History Museum in London. In their Selous Collection they have 524 mammals from three continents, all shot by him, including nineteen African lions.

In the last year of his life, while in combat in 1916, he was known to carry his butterfly net in the evening and collect specimens, for the same institution.

Overall, more than five thousand plants and animal specimens were donated by him to the Natural History section of the British Museum.

This collection was beld from 1881 in the new Natural History Museum in South Kensington (which became an independent institution in 1963). Here, posthumously in 1920, they unveiled a bronze bust of him in the Main Hall, where it stands to this day.

He is mentioned wide in foremost taxidermist Rowland Wards catalogues for world’s largest animal specimens hunted, where Selous is ranked in many trophy categories, including rhinoceros, elephant and many ungulates. He was awarded the Royal Geographical Society’s Founders Medal in 1893 ‘in recognition of twenty years’ exploration and surveys in South Africa’.

In 1896, British zoologist William Edward de Winton (1856-1922), named a new African small Carnivora, Paracynictis selousi, or the Selous mongoose, in his honor. Also, a subspecies of the African Sitatunga antelope, (Tragelaphus spekii selousi), bears his name.

Selous was one of the first conservationists. In none of his expeditions was his object the taking of a big bag, but as a hunter-naturalist and slayer of great game he ranked with the most famous of the world’s sportsmen.

In leading so many hunting expeditions, Selous noticed over time how the impact of European hunters was leading to a significant reduction in the amount of game available in Africa. In 1881 he returned to Britain for a while, saying;

“ Every year elephants were becoming scarcer and wilder south of the Zambezi, so that it had become impossible to make a living by hunting at all. ”

Selouse Game Reserve
The Selous Game Reserve in southeastern Tanzania is a hunting reserve named in his honor. Established in 1922, it covers an area of more than 17 000 m² (44 800 km²) along the rivers Kilombero, Ruaha, and Rufiji.

The area first became a hunting reserve in 1905, although it is rarely visited by humans due to the strong presence of the Tsetse fly. In 1982 it was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site due to the diversity of its wildlife and undisturbed nature.

Frederick Courteney Selous image remains a classic, romantic portrait of proper Victorian period English gentleman of the colonies, one whose real life adventures and exploits of almost epic proportions generated successful Lost World and Steampunk genre fictional characters like Allan Quatermain, to a large extent an embodiment to the popular “white hunter” concept of the times; yet he remained a modest and stoic pillar in personality all throughout his life.

As himself he was featured in the “Young Indiana Jones” and “Rhodes” series. He was widely remembered in real tales of war, exploration and big game hunting as balanced blend between a gentleman officer and epic wild man.

Appearance and character
Bestowed with exceptional qualities in a man, he excelled at the English sports of the day: cricket, rugby, cycling, swimming and tennis, he loved outdoors the best developing a rugged and robust physique by trekking, packing, marching and hunting for so long.

He was also known as an accomplished rider, he waged war and hunted much on horses.

To the African locals he was the “best white runner” (in the endurance aspect, similar as to native bushmen’s concept). While in England, all his life he played sports, he still did half day 100 mile bycicle races when almost sixty years old.

Millais, friend and biographer, wrote: As sport he loved cricket most, and played regularly for his club at Worplesdon taking part in all their matches until 1915…”Big Game Hunters” vs. “Worplesdon” was always a great and solemn occasion.

“ If there was one striking feature in his physiognomy it was his wonderful eyes, as clear and as blue as the summer sea. Nearly every one who came in contact with him noticed his eyes. They were the eyes of the man who looks into the beyond vast spaces.

Instinctively one saw in them the hunter and the man of wide views. In social intercourse Selous had a presence that was apt to make other people look insignificant.

He was adored by all his friends, and even perfect strangers seemed to come under his magnetism at the first introduction” – J.G. Millais, 1919.

All his life, he sported a full beard, which together with his signature hats, makes him an easily recognisable icon:

He wore a double Terai grey slouch hat, slightly on the back oh his head. Khaki knickerbockers, with no puttees, bare legs, except for his socks and shirt open at the neck, with a knotted handkerchief round the neck to keep the sun off, with a long native stick in his hand. He had a rooted objection to wearing a cork helmet.

It is impossible to forget the impression he made. He was as straight as a guardsman, with a broad deep chest, with a beautiful healthy look in his face. – Capt. R. M. Haines of South African Force, 1917. ”

Accounts on Miles biography read: He ate less than most men, and never drank anything but tea, which he enjoyed at every meal. Sometimes he drank champagne at big dinners, but rich wines and high feeding had no attractions to him.

Occasional accounts of whisky deeds upon meeting old friends exist however. Also, he was fond of his pipe and tobacco.

All these never accounted to excess, except tea, fact that further promoted him as the Englishman ideal.

Short rains can occur in November but are characterized by short showers which do not last long.

The heat of summer is seasonally often cooled by windy conditions, resulting in pleasant sea breezes, particularly on the North, East coasts and central regions of the Island.

Being near to the Equator, it is warm all year round, but officially, summer and winter peak in December and June respectively.

This is shown by the weather information below.

Tanzania Zanzibar is blessed with an average of 7-8 Hrs of sunshine daily.

Arusha’s climate compared to Tanzania’s parks

Arusha is the town closest to the most popular northern parks and has a comparably mild climate.

The peak amount of rainfall that Arusha experiences in April is considerably less than in most parks.

The altitude in the Serengeti ranges greatly, so even within the park there are wide climatic variations.

Ngorongoro crater rim receives quite a lot of rain and is very cold during evenings and mornings due to its high altitude (about 2300m/7545ft).

Lower lying parks, such as Manyara, Selous, Mikumi, Ruaha, Gombe, Mahale Mountains and Katavi, are slighty warmer than Arusha- especially at night.

Tanzania’s weather in general

Tanzania has a pleasant tropical climate but has large regional climatic variations influenced by several factors, including altitude.

Temperatures drop by about 6.5°C for every 1000m you climb (or 3.5°F per 1000ft).

The hottest and most humid part of the country is on the coast.

Other low lying areas, such as the western and southern parks, are also hot but much less humid. The rest of the interior is much milder and cools down significantly at night.

Tanzania is too close to the equator to experience a real winter and summer.

There is, however, a dry and wet season.

Dry season – June to October

There is virtually no rainfall during the whole winter and humidity is very low.

When water becomes scarce wildlife will gather around predictable water resources.

June, July, August, September & October – Afternoon temperatures are usually between 20°C/68°F and 30°C/86°F and vary greatly according to altitude and location.

Most days have a fine, clear sky and sunny weather.

It cools off at night; be sure to pack warm clothing because morning game drives in open vehicles will be cold- especially in the northern parks.

These are the coldest and least humid months and the most pleasant time of the year to visit the coastal areas. There is very little rain in most of the country.

Wet season – November to May
During most of the wet season, afternoon temperatures are more consistent throughout the country (a bit above or below 30°C/86°F) but will be colder above 1300m/4265ft.

Morning temperatures are more moderate, but still cold in most northern parks due to the high altitude.

It is advised to pack a windproof jacket and warm sweater for early morning game drives in open vehicles.

November & December – ‘Short rains’ – A period of about a month of short rains which occurs sometime between November and December.

Its timing is unpredictable and, in Northern Tanzania, it can even happen in October.

The rains will rarely interfere with your safari.

January & February – The northern parks and coastal areas tend to have a break in the rainy season with less rain around this time, but the exact timing of the dry spell is unpredictable. The other parks don’t really experience a dry spell.

In Selous, Ruaha and Mikumi the rain gradually builds from November to its peak in April. Gombe, Mahale and Katavi have one continuous wet season.

March, April & May – ‘Long rains’ – These are the wettest months.

It tends to rain heavily almost every day, although not often for the whole day. It is often cloudy, especially in the northern parks.

Humidity tends to be high, especially in the hotter southern and western parks.

Zanzibar could be as far away as somewhere in Asia or Arabia, like Sinbad the Sailor Open Sesame Land, or Ali Baba and the 40 Thieves as far as they know and as for Tanzania itself,  it is common for people to mix it up with Tasmania!!! Auch!! Some people might even just think it is a name of a local bar in their neighborhood!!

It gets worse, how many people think that the Mount Kilimanjaro is in Kenya, (some blame goes onto the Kenyan tourism authorities for years having marketed Mt. Kili as if it was in Kenya when Tanzania was still a sleeping safari giant, yes the Kenyans promote Mt. Kili as being in their country as you can view Mountain Kilimanjaro across the neighboring countries borders.

Tanzania and Zanzibar are not exactly famous yet as in sports to put us on the map, one of our most famous sportsman and achievements is Filbert Bayi, how many people remember or know him.

We have had one or two other sporting achievements in the marathon and boxing, the national football teams are improving slowing trying to get into the top 100 in Fifa rankings.

Freddy Mercury lead singer and band leader of the famous rock group Queen is considered Zanzibar most famous son, not many people know he  is not even acceptable as a good example to the youth of Zanzibar and therefore not promoted on the Island…
